Italy's premier art collection boasts thousands of world masterpieces. And that alone is a good reason to visit! The Uffizi Gallery can rightfully be called one of the oldest museums in the world. It opened to the public almost immediately after its construction in the 16th century. And it was founded during one of the most significant moments in history—the height of the Florentine Renaissance. In 1581, Cosimo I de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany, commissioned his architect, Giorgio Vasari, to design and begin construction. Almost immediately, the gallery became, and continues to be, one of the most important art collections in the world. The heart of the collection is the works of the great Italian Renaissance masters, especially the Florentines. The Louvre, the Hermitage, and the Prado—the Florentines envy this rich collection. Masterpieces by such masters as Rembrandt, Dürer, Tiziano, Caravaggio, Michelangelo, Raphael, Leonardo da Vinci, Botticelli, and many others are collected here—thousands of masterpieces and the incredible stories associated with them that you're sure to discover! Discover how the world, culture, personality, and destiny of great masters are revealed through color and form. Whether you're passionate about art or want to get closer to the world of beauty, a visit to the Uffizi Gallery with an experienced guide will be a unique and vivid memory of inimitable Florence. And for dessert, a panoramic view of Florence from the terrace of the Loggia dei Lanzi. Here, you can get a close-up look at the Arnolfo Tower of the Palazzo Vecchio, home to one of the largest clocks in the world... with one hand! Of course, I'll explain why!
