For many travelers, the off-the-beaten-path Florence on the other side of the Arno remains unfairly overlooked. To avoid this hype, we'll stroll through the streets of the Oltrarno, where the spirit of the Renaissance still reigns! You'll hear the legends of Piazza Santa Trinita and the stories of religious orders, understand why the frescoes of the Branchacci Chapel are considered masterpieces of art, explore the residences of great Florentine dynasties, and discover their secrets. Stories of Piazza Santa Trinita The walk will begin in Piazza Santa Trinita: you'll learn why the Column of Justice stands here, hear about the difficult fate of Giovanni Gualberto, the religious order of the Vallombrosians, and their church, Santa Trinita, after which the square is named. We'll then explore the elegant bridge of the same name, adorned with statues of the four seasons, and discuss the history of its construction, in which Michelangelo himself was involved. Architectural Masterpieces of the San Frediano District In the magnificent San Frediano district, you'll see one of the city's oldest wooden gates and stroll through Piazza Cestello. Here, I'll introduce you to the history of the Church of San Frediano in Cestello, formerly a convent, and tell you about the religious orders—the Carmelites and Cistercians—who were the church's former and current owners. We'll also discuss the Carmelites at the Church of Santa Maria del Carmine, famous for its Brancacci Chapel frescoes. You'll learn why the chapel's frescoes were immediately recognized as a masterpiece and how Florence once nearly lost this treasure. The Great Dynasties of Florence While exploring the Frescobaldi Palace, you'll hear the story of the dynasty, world-famous for its superb wines and responsible for the construction of the marvelous Santo Spirito church. And, of course, we won't forget the legendary Medici! You'll see their last city residence – the Pitti Palace, built by Duke Cosimo I for his beloved wife. I'll tell you about the palace's construction stages, its unusual name, and what's housed there today. The highlight of our walk will be the palace of Bianca Capello – one of the most infamous and legendary women of the Renaissance, who earned the nickname "The Sorceress."
