Immerse yourself in the very heart of Florence—where its spirit, history, and beauty are born. In one tour, you'll visit all the cathedral complex's crowning jewels: the majestic Duomo di Santa Maria del Fiore, the ancient Baptistery of San Giovanni, the Crypt of Santa Reparata with its archaeological remains, and—the crowning achievement of architectural genius—Filippo Brunelleschi's dome. The tour concludes with a visit to the Opera del Duomo Museum, home to the original sculptures of the first façade by Arnolfo di Cambio, Michelangelo's Pietà, the marvelous choirs of Lucca della Robbia and Donatello, and the latter's famous work, "Saint Mary Magdalene." The Cathedral Square—history embodied in marble. You'll learn how seven centuries of Florence's spiritual and political history are embodied in a single ensemble—through the masterpieces of Arnolfo di Cambio, Ghiberti, Donatello, Brunelleschi, and Michelangelo. You'll walk through the Piazza del Duomo, the site of the city's symbol. I'll explain why the cathedral was named "Santa Maria del Fiore," how its architecture reflects the ideals of the republic, and why its enormous dome was possible in the 15th century, when no engineer understood how to erect such a structure without supports. Inside the Cathedral and Baptistery. You'll enter the legendary Baptistery of San Giovanni, one of Florence's oldest churches. You'll see the dome's golden mosaics depicting the Last Judgment and Ghiberti's famous bronze doors, nicknamed by Michelangelo the "Gates of Paradise." You'll learn who was honored with burial in this unique place and the secrets hidden in the marble floors and ornamentation. Brunelleschi's Dome is the heart of Florence. You'll climb to the top of the greatest dome of the Renaissance! Brunelleschi built it without scaffolding or supports, which was considered a miracle of the 15th century. I'll tell you what engineering tricks and machines he devised, the intrigues and rivalries he faced, and why his project forever changed European architecture. On the way up, you'll admire Vasari and Zuccari's frescoes of the Last Judgment—with angels, the righteous, and sinners depicted with almost theatrical expressiveness. And at the top, your reward awaits—a breathtaking view of Florence, stretching all the way to the hills. Museo dell'Opera del Duomo. In the museum, you'll see the originals of all the works that adorned the cathedral complex: Donatello's "Mary Magdalene," Michelangelo's "Pietà," created for his own tomb, and a collection of reliquaries and jewelry from the 14th and 15th centuries, including a silver altar weighing over 200 kg. Every step of this tour is imbued with the atmosphere of the Renaissance and the genius of the masters.
