This route is especially beloved by Florentines and allows you to enjoy the city's most famous and colorful panoramas. The first opens at the Romanesque church of San Miniato al Monte, the second at the picturesque Piazzale Michelangelo. The path will lead from the Golden Bridge past former defensive walls, medieval towers, and ancient churches. Along the way, you'll hear my stories about the history, architecture, secrets, and... reasons to fall in love with Florence! All of Florence from the terrace of San Miniato al Monte and Piazzale Michelangelo The focus of this walk is on Florence's best views. You'll admire the city to your heart's content as you ascend to the Romanesque basilica of San Miniato al Monte. You'll learn who San Miniato was and why this beautiful church is dedicated to him. Of course, this legend isn't the only one about this wondrous hill. From the observation deck at Piazzale Michelangelo, you'll see all the city's most important landmarks at once—I'll tell you the essentials of each. Be careful: you risk falling in love with Florence forever here! Stories of Ancient Towers and City Walls You'll see three well-preserved medieval towers that guarded the entrance to the city and learn the stories behind Cosimo I de' Medici's famous phrase, "Every man master of his own house." You'll walk along the surviving defensive walls designed by Michelangelo himself and hear about the event that led to their construction. I'll tell you why the Forte Belvedere fortress was originally built and how it was actually used. I'll also show you one of Florence's oldest gates, built in 1260—a bas-relief of St. George slaying the dragon is still visible on it. An ancient church, Galileo, and the charm of the Tuscan capital The route will take you through the vibrant San Niccolò neighborhood and past the oldest church in Florence (after San Lorenzo), Santa Felicita, near which Assyrian and Greek traders settled in the 2nd century, bringing Christianity to the region. Near Forte Belvedere, you'll enjoy views of the Boboli Gardens and the recognizable Tuscan landscape with olive trees and cypresses. Passing Galileo Galilei's house, we'll discuss the genius's difficult life, his enemies, and his generous patrons. Organizational Details - This is a walking tour - please wear comfortable shoes.
